I don’t know about you, but I’m not a huge fan of electronic gadgets as gifts for elementary age children. It seems that kids get sucked into video games, online gaming, and tv watching. And once they’re sucked in, it’s hard for them to return to a place where they can rely on their own creativity for entertainment.
If the other homeschooling moms I know are representative of the majority, I’m not alone in my feelings.
With the push for electronics as gifts every Christmas, what is a mom who wants to foster creativity in her children to do?
Fortunately there are options, and one of those options is to buy a craft kit! I’ve given craft kits as gifts many times, and I’m super impressed with the selection at Walmart this year. I was sent four different craft kits, aimed at a variety of kids, to sample. I liked what I saw.
First of all, Walmart is now carrying craft kits for boys! Since it’s hard to find crafts specific to boys, this is very exciting. For those who love guts and gore, the above Zombie Creator kit is perfect! Geared toward boys ages 6 and above, kids can make three different zombies with plaster and molds. Then they can paint them in whatever creepy colors they choose! Price: $9.97.
The birdhouse pictured above was my favorite of the craft kits I received. With this Made By Me Birdhouse kit, boys or girls, aged 6 and older can build and paint their own birdhouse to display outside! And since this craft is geared toward kids, no tools or nails are needed for assembly! Price: $9.97 at Walmart.
Girls who love glitter and glam might love the above pictured Just My Style Crystal Rings & Things jewelry design kit. Girls ages six and up can make 14 projects from this one little kit. At $9.97, it’s a great deal!
Finally, I was sent a Doodle Deco Glitter Tote Bag. What is it? Well, girls ages 6 and up can color their own tote bag and add colorful gemstone accents! It’s a fairly good sized bag, so it could hold all of a little girl’s necessities: a book, a doll, a hat…whatever your girl likes to tote around. Price: $12.97 at Walmart.
Craft boxes are perfect gifts for children ages 5-13! To see the wide variety of craft kits available, visit www.craftprojectideas.com.
Have you ever given craft projects as gifts? What did the recipient think?
