Of Cats and Children

So, my new year is off to a mixed start! On the plus side, my goal of reading 52 books is going along quite well. I’ve already finished my first (review up soon). Eating healthier is also going well. I haven’t had a Dr. Pepper in a couple of days, which is amazing for me!

As for my blogging goals, well, we’ve hit a snag. Yesterday, after having checked my email and Facebook, I left my charging laptop on the sofa. Then I went about cleaning up the house. Sportsguy, Stargirl, and Bug were all out of the house at a Rose Bowl Party (Yeah Ducks!). Chloe, the Wonder Mutt was outside. So it was me, Boo, and the cats. Sounds innocent enough, right?

Where was I? Oh yeah, I was cleaning up the house, so it would be nice and organized for starting school tomorrow. I was working in our living/dining area, while Boo was playing happily in the living room. Now, don’t worry, we have a very open floor plan, and I could see Boo from where I was working.

At one point, she had some books and moved over to stand at the coffee table, right in front of the couch. I went on unloading the dishwasher, as I listened to her happily signing to herself. I was so happy. My child was in a good mood, my house was getting organized, life was good.

Not five minutes later, I looked over to see what Boo was up to. She was still in the vicinity of the sofa. And then I noticed that Mittens, one of our cats, was sitting on top of my charging laptop. My heart stopped.

You see, Mittens has a thing for charging cords. He likes to chew them. Nothing I have tried has worked on him. I ran over to knock him off my computer, and then I saw it. My charging light was not lit. I fiddled with the cord. Nothing. I took a close look at the cord. Cat teeth marks. Yes, Mittens destroyed another Mac cord.

Not happy, I flipped my laptop open to see how much of a charge I had left. Fortunately it was almost charged. Unfortunately someone had been messing with my laptop and all my settings were off. I wasn’t connected to the internet and my clock was set to some odd date. Boo. She loves my laptop. She once made it speak to me. A techy girl after my own heart. You have to love it. But sometimes she changes settings that I don’t know how to fix.

The clock is now correct, but I still can’t figure out how to get my Mac to automatically connect to the right network. I hope I don’t have to do it manually for the rest of my life.

Needless to say, this has put a crimp in my blogging this week. I have ordered a new Mac cord, which should arrive on Thursday, but if my computer dies before then, which it probably will, there will be no blogging for me in the meanwhile.

C’est La Vie! More time for reading, right?

  1. Oh DRAT. My mom was vacuuming for me once while visiting (I know, bless her, right?) and she ran over the end of my Mac cord. Those things aren’t cheap. So sorry you have to replace yours and even more sorry that it seems like it isn’t the first time!

  2. I used to run over cords with the vacuum when I was younger!

Here’s what I do when I have computer issues. I Google whatever problem I’m having, and I can usually find a fix. I may have to read or skim several sites, but it has been helpful.

I have a hybrid wheelchair (manual and battery powered, switchable at the touch of a button). The battery does need charging every couple of days or so, and I have a charger for it. One of our cats dearly loves to sit on top of the charger, and she is so cute the way she curls her tail primly around her feet to fit on it, and she always looks so pleased with herself. Fortunately, she does not chew on cords.
