During the 2009-2010 school year, my children studied an overview of countries and cultures around the world. When I was given the opportunity to review Travel the World, the June 2010 Module for the 2009 Schoolhouse Planner by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, I was pretty excited! I figured it would be a nice summer review for the kids.
Don’t let the name of this product deceive you. Travel the World is an add-on to supplement the 2009 Schoolhouse Planner, but you don’t need the planner to use it. Travel the World can stand alone as an overview of world geography!
This 55 page e-book packs in a lot of information and activities for children ranging from Kindergarten through High School. I used it with Bug, my soon to be second grader, and Stargirl, my son to be seventh grader.
The first part of the module contains information about maps, the oceans, and the continents. This is followed by a wealth of activities, such as fill in the blank forms, crossword puzzles, copywork, word searches, links to lapbook activities and more! Bug especially loved the Color the Continent maps, where he had to color the picture and guess which continent it was. Stargirl liked the word searches. And I liked the fact that the copywork was available in manuscript and cursive, so they could both work on their handwriting!
In the back of Travel the World is a High School Expansion section, with suggested activities for High School aged kids. And finally, there are a couple of recipes to try and a huge list of resources, in case you want to further your study of world geography. We tried one of the recipes, and though we thought it was a bit bland, it was a great starter recipe to tweak with different seasonings and spices.
By covering a few pages in Travel the World each week, we’re making sure we don’t forget everything we learned last year, working on skills like handwriting, and having a great time doing it!

The Bottom Line: My kids loved Travel the World! My son, who is a huge geography nut, especially liked it. Though it’s not an in-depth study of world geography, it’s a great introduction or review. We found it perfect for a summer study to cement what we’d learned about geography last school year.
